Description

"General McClellan's strategy of defense and attrition allowed the Confederated States under President Toombs to begin his policy of Reconcentration. The CSA consolidated their current resources, shifted their production from cash crop to food stuffs, and began training their raw recruits under the talented officers they had under their banner. During this process, the Confederated States began trading with the French via the Mexican Empire, though no official recognition or interventions were made or proposed at the time. But, unofficially, a few Dixie units were trained under Mexican Imperial officers and French advisers, creating the famed "Gray Boneys", and surplus French arms also made it across the border. Eventually, a French vessel was caught leaving a Dixie port, officially there for simple repairs, but was seen trading weapons to Confederated States officials by Union spies. The Union vessels attempting to maintain a blockade sank the vessel. The crew is then saved by locals, and a Confederacy fleet proceeded to sink that Union vessel in retaliation. France then officially intervened in the conflict..."

A Guide to the First Yankee-Dixie War, Copyright 2009, Canberra Society of History.

"...The war ended with most damage being in border states, and General Pope's and General Hooker's strategies resulted in harming Union relations in both Kentucky and Missouri, causing the split in popular-opinion that had so divided the two states to grow beyond a regional divide, with debates on the war occurring heatedly and even-sided from Springfield to Maryville, and from Bowling Green to Lexington. In the final talks of the war, codified in the Treaty of Mexico City, while the most notorious issues was the nullification of Confederacy debts to nations other than France, creating major tensions with Britain, the status of the border states was a major point of contention, best seen in the notorious Travis-Collins Affair..."

"Some of the most important parts of the Treaty are the 'Matters upon the Regions of Missouri and Kentucky', outlining the maintained independence of the two border states for a period of twenty years before they may choose to join either the USA or the CSA via referendum, with the option of continued independence for another twenty year period. Missouri, its infrastructure ravaged, would eventually join the Confederated States in 1904, it's powerful but vanishing slaver elite opting for the Dixie policy of compensation. The same story did not occur in nearby Kentucky, however. It, if anything, benefited from the war. The USA and CSA both refused to trade with one another directly after the Treaty of Mexico City, and with its infrastructure being far more intact than Missouri's, Kentucky became the commercial hub of North America. Merchants and companies wishing to market to both Yankees and Dixie moved and became "Kentuck"-brand companies that both sides were willing to buy from. Many scientists congregated as well, both because of the far more optimistic post-war attitude and for the same lack of political restriction, wishing to expand beyond the realms of military research (in the case of the Union) or agriculture and industry (in the case of the Confederacy). Slavery was small, and while not officially illegalized until 1889, there was not one registered slave in Kentucky after 1877, either from direct emancipation, "theft" by retreating Union soldiers, or escape over the border. Kentucks in coming years became hypercapitalistic in culture, and incredibly proud of their prosperity, voting to remain independent three times before officially ending the bi-decade referendum. Said culture, however, has put them in the Dixie sphere thanks to the CSA's hardline stance against communism."

"Tragedy struck Kentucky today, as two Arab men unleashed a lethal hail of bullets in Bowling Green, killing numerous unnarmed civilians and several police officers. It would seem they were from the Federation of Communist Nations in the Middle East, and the attack appears to have been ideologically motivated. President Daniels was unavailable for comment. More information to come as we investigate."
